Methodological Guide

 "Forum Theatre -

a non-formal teaching method in European context"

The 200 pages’ guide was a complex work of all the partners. Each one had its equal contribution and shared a part of it’s experience in the project. From the beginning, we wanted a book that teachers really use, that is why the main part reveals examples of good practice for different subjects.

The four chapters follow a logic pattern: the first two parts deal with theoretical, historical and methodological aspects of non-formal education and forum theatre, and the third, the most substantial one, is dedicated to examples of good practice. The last chapter was about trend and opportunities. The guide has attached 2 DVD-s with 14GB of forum theatre recorded plays.

The methodological guide structured as follows:

  1. A foreword made by the scientific reviewer (Ph. D professor, The Faculty of Philosophy and Political Social Sciences “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Iasi

  2. A motivation on forum theatre’s educational values

  3. Chapter 1 focus on the importance of non-formal education in the development of students’ personality

  4. Chapter 2 Theatre Forum - therapy, education, learning

  5. Chapter 3-  Examples of Good Practice

  6. Chapter 4 Non-formal methods of education and training – Trends and opportunities

The examples of good practice derived from examples of forum theatre plays we have performed at festivals in the project on topics like discrimination, familly problems, school issues, project lessons on curriculum areas.

The project lesson plans exhibit the students’ opportunity to be actively and responsibly involved in the learning process, while the teacher is the facilitator of the activity. When the lesson plans presenting the examples of good practice in the project were analysed, another noticeable result of the inclusion of non-formal method (Forum Theatre) was observed: the objectives focus on developing students’ skills and competences rather than memorizing the explained subject matter. Thus, developing key competences was a vital element of contemporary curriculum planning. In nearly all lesson plans, the development of communication, negotiation using arguments, and cooperation are listed among key objectives.

Nearly half of all lesson plans mention the development of ethical, moral, responsible and/or emphatic behaviour as important objectives. It is worth emphasising that the method to obtain the above mentioned objectives is Forum Theatre, which proves its suitability as a non-formal method of education.

Both DVD-s attached to the guide presents a selection of our best forum theatre plays and it is the

instrument teacher can use. Even a teacher doesn’t have time to try this method in class, he can still use the DVD-s showing students different approaches and solution to universal students’ problems (with family, in school, discrimination).

The guide was finished and printed in May 2016 in a number of 120 copies. It was disseminated at Multiplier Event E2, May 2016, a Conference "Theater forum - a non-formal teaching method in the European context”.
