"Forum Theater, a non-formal teaching method: achievements and challenges",

Learning activity "Forum Theater, a non-formal teaching method: achievements and challenges" was carried out between 7-12th March, 2016, at Anamur Anadolu Lisesi, in the city of Anamur, Turkey. The purpose of the staff training event was to overview the forum theatre method, to share our experiences so far, to find a way for a better insertion among other non-formal methods, to emphasize its pro’s and to change it into a better didactical method of education. Each team presented their experience with the method, the influence on students, the impact on teachers, the way they improved it to achieve the objectives of the lesson plan. Apart from this “on the field” work, each team prepared and presented different theoretical approaches about the method. The teams presentation was the base of the chapters for the latter released intellectual output O2, the methodological guide“Forum theatre – a non-formal teaching method in European context”. The presentations alternated with interactive sessions/workshops for a better overview of the theme.

The first day: opening speech from the headmaster of the school, visiting the school and interaction with school students and teachers. Romanian team presented their point of view over the method and also other non-formal activities carried out so far.  Then the Poland team detailed on the “The importance of non-formal method of education” and the Italian team about the philosophy that stays behind of “Forum Theatre – a non-formal method of education”.

The second day: interactive discussion on the presentation above. Slovenian team focused in their presentation on how should look a forum theatre lesson plan regarding any studying discipline by giving examples and arguing their point of view. In the following session, the teams debated about the structure of a lesson plan and agreed with one that we should use in the intellectual output O2.

The third day: Romanian team detailed their vision on lesson plan for everyday subjects that starts the students’ interests. There were presented some examples from the forum plays that approached this kind of subjects (discrimination, family issues). The Slovenian team presented their approaches on forum theatre and emphasised it with appropriate examples. Also, it was continued the interactive session with examples of different discipline forum theatre lesson plans.

The forth day: the interactive session/workshop continue with reviewing lesson plans on different curricular area. Later, this lesson plans were adapted and printed in the intellectual output O2. Also, teams from Poland and Turkey presented their experiences with forum theatre method and offered some interesting approaches. Romanian team presented a reviewed version of the forum theatre lesson plans performed in Ptuj (that featured issues like family problems and addiction).

The fifth day: discussion about trend and prospects for non-formal methods of education was held via Skype with the Bulgarian team. Due to the recent at that time events in Turkey that could affect their safety, and in accordance with their Agency approval, the Bulgarian team decided not to participate in the event. The activities continued with some debates about Bulgarian team proposed. Finally, the project coordinator emphasised some project time aspects and administrative issues regarding the intellectual output O2. The meeting ended with final conclusions carried out by the Turkish coordinator, the final reflection from the guests and evaluation.
